Selfridges tops Time Out London 100 Best Shops list

Time Out has revealed its annual 100 Best Shops list, recognising the best retailers, big and small, in the capital. Fashion stores dominate the 2014 list, with department store Selfridges topping the list, closely followed by Liberty in second place and House of Hackney in third place. Selfridges has been awarded the top title, climbing three spots since last year. However independent shops receive the most recognition, making up over half of the list, with high-end boutiques such as The Shop at Bluebird on the Kings Road and Celestine Eleven in Shoreditch at numbers seven and 11 respectively. Of the top 100, nearly 1 in 5 were British designers including Paul Smith (10), Stella McCartney (44) and Alexander McQueen (55). The list was compiled by staff at Time Out, retail experts, designers, and a vast network of Londoners who judged stores on their exclusivity, individuality, value and service. Brands such as Topshop, Oxford Circus and Burberry, Regent Street were given a special mention for providing customers with a unique experience that sets them apart from their sister stores. Time Out London’s Top 10 Best Shops are: Selfridges (1), Liberty (2), House of Hackney (3), Rough Trade East (4), & Other Stories (5), Dover Street Market (6), The Shop at Bluebird (7), Topshop, Oxford Circus (8), Blitz Vintage (9) and Paul Smith, Albermale Street (10). Vintage and retro stores make up 15 per cent of shops including Blitz Vintage (9), Beyond Retro (22), Vintage Showroom (29) and Pitfield London (38). The Time Out annual list included all shops in London, including: Best One Stop Shop – Selfridges (1), Best Independent Boutique – House of Hackney (3), Best High Street Store – & Other Stories (5), Best New Store – & Other Stories (5), Best Service – John Lewis (13), Best for Gifts – Selfridges (1), Best for Lingerie – Coco De Mer (37), Best for Home – Present (17) and Best for Kids – J Crew (26). The full Top 100 will be revealed online and in Time Out London magazine, distributed across London tomorrow.
